Birthday Recap

I am so thankful for such sweet friends and family that made me feel so loved on my birthday. The celebrations started at the end of last week. I enjoyed a birthday dinner with friends from work on Thursday, then Friday we had a birthday dinner with the Fletcher's family...a joint celebration for me and his brother John. Yesterday was a laid back but fun birthday. Fletcher made me a yummy breakfast, then I headed off to work.

It was a really busy day at work, but some of my co-workers decorated my car (and filled it with balloons) and then made me a special birthday brownie (brownies are my weakness at work).

Last night Fletcher and I went to a fun Italian restaurant for dinner then came home and watched a redbox movie. All day long I enjoyed text messages, phone calls, and voicemails from sweet friends and family. I also enjoyed opening lots of fun birthday packages that came in the mail. Things to wear, things to cook/bake with, and more! The most mysterious package was my package from Anna that needed to be refrigerated. I couldn't believe my eyes when I opened the box! Let me introduce you to Shari's Berries...

They are the most DELICIOUS chocolate covered strawberries I have ever had! I am trying to make them last but they are so good I know they won't be around here long! Clearly my birthday was a great combination of sweet treats and sweet friends and family. Thank you to everyone who made my first birthday in the real world special! Here's to 23!

Chocolate Chunk Banana Bread

This week I had some bananas go bad so I decided it was the perfect opportunity to try a new banana bread recipe.

Here's what you need.

First you mix together the dry ingredients: flour, sugar, baking powder, salt.

In a separate bowl mix together eggs, mashed bananas, oil, and milk. Add liquid mixture to dry mixture and stir just until moistened.

Stir in chocolate chunks and chopped walnuts.

Pour into greased loaf pan and bake at 350 for 55 minutes (I had to bake mine an extra 10).

Let cool, then slice and enjoy! I made this bread on Friday night, then ended up making a last minute trip to Memphis on Saturday. When I got back home tonight the bread was gone! I think Fletch gives this new recipe a thumbs up!

Chocolate Chunk Banana Bread
2 cups flour
1 cup sugar
2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
2 eggs
1 cup mashed bananas (3 bananas)
1/3 cup oil
1/4 cup milk
Chocolate Chunks
1/2 cup chopped walnuts

23 on the 23rd

Happy GOLDEN Birthday to my Sweet Friend Lacey!

If you want to see why she is the best friend a girl could ask for you can check out last year'spost! Lacey and I have celebrated our birthdays together since we were 17! Celebrating her birthday from 200 miles away is definitely not the same. We lived together all 4 years of college and moving to separate states has definitely been a challenge...but our separation has only made me more thankful for her friendship. I am so thankful for her sweet spirit, her encouragement, and her loyal friendship. So many of both my happiest and hardest moments have been experienced with Lace by my side. She played a huge part in so many important events the last year-college graduation, she helped Fletch scheme during our engagement, and she was there to keep me calm, cool, and collected during the wedding planning process. I am thankful that each year we continue to make memories and experience life together, whether it be in the same city or not!

22 has been good to us...here's to 23!!!

Lace, I hope you have the BEST day ever!

The Loveliest Village on the Plains

This weekend we went to Auburn to visit friends. I hadn't been to Auburn since I moved out after graduation....How terrible is that? My tigers were national champs and I didn't make it down to 1 football game! Probably had something to do with the four month engagement. Anyways, I L-O-V-E Auburn in the spring and we had such a wonderful weekend on the plains. We stayed with Kari and Dan, but got to spend time with Sarah Beth and Tom once they got back from the beach on Saturday. Friday night we went to Amsterdam where I enjoyed every single bite of the Pepper Jack Grilled Chicken Sandwich! Saturday morning we went on a long walk, and I was quite the tourist. We went back to the BH and it was bittersweet seeing our old house! The girls who live there now were on spring break, but we ran into our landlord in the driveway and so we got to visit with him and go inside and check everything out.

Next stop, toomer's corner! They are working so hard to save the trees! They had dug down deep and were replacing the soil. When we were there they were spraying the roots with water. We of course had to snap some pictures.

Then we went inside Toomer's Corner and I got sweet tea. I know they are known for their lemonade, but their sweet tea is the absolute BEST. And we were thirsty after our long walk so it hit the spot!

We spent the rest of the day shopping downtown, going to tiger town, etc. Then Saturday night we grilled out and SB and Tom came over to play games. Sunday we went to church, went to laredo's, then hit the road.

It was the perfect weekend of doing all my favorite Auburn things, and we enjoyed spending time with friends so much. Being in a new town can be kind of hard sometimes and it was so refreshing to be around old friends. I surely won't wait so long before I hit the road to Auburn again.

Not much going on around here...

Apologies for the lack of blogging. I've been battling a bad cold the last few days and I haven't beat it yet! Not much has been going on around here...Our landlord emailed us to say they were putting a for sale sign in the yard this weekend (stress!) and so I spent Friday night cleaning like crazy. The only positive part of all the cleaning was that I was rocking out to Taylor Swift...and thinking about how I can't wait to be at her concert on September 18th! Our tickets are AWESOME thanks to Lace ordering them the minute they went on sale, and I CAN NOT WAIT!

The rest of the weekend I have spent laying in bed with my box of kleenex watching movies. I'll leave y'all with the trailer for this movie that I can not wait to see! We all read the book in college and we will probably need to plan a reunion in May to see the movie together.

Wedding Favors

I went for a DIY wedding favor, and it ended up being quite the project. I saw the idea of doing birdseed hearts as wedding favors, and thought it would be perfect for our fall wedding. But I didn't anticipate how much work it would be, the potential for how it could go wrong, and I definitely didn't picture myself staying up late finishing them two nights before I got married.

Here is what it took...easy, right?
Silicone Heart Molds (Hobby Lobby)
Twine (Hobby Lobby)
Gelatine (Target)
Birdseed (Target)

Here is where the problems began...I didn't really measure, and it was kind of hard to figure out how much of each ingredient to put in each batch. It was about 3 packets of Gelatine for every 1 cup of water. And then i would just pour birdseed in until it reached the right consistency. Once I made the mixture (water + gelatine + birdseed) I would put a layer in the bottom of a heart mold, put the looped twine in the center, then put another layer of the birdseed on top.

Then I put the hearts on a cookie sheet (not all would fit) and put it in the refrigerator overnight. I made a few batches about a month before the wedding and stored in an air tight container.
Problem #1--I hadn't let them dry out enough before putting them in the airtight container and they began to grow mold. Lesson learned: Make a new batch, leave in the refrigerator a couple nights, then take out and leave at room temperature before storing in an air tight container. Do y'all feel sorry for my roommate, having to deal with all this in our kitchen? She was so sweet about it and acted like they weren't in the way...but they were everywhere!
Next Step: Order Bags. I ordered them here on etsy.

Problem #2-- The bags were too small and the birdseed hearts didn't fit! Lesson learned: Begged Etsy seller to let me return them and ordered more bags. Also, sent PDF of our "F" and had a personalized stamp made here.

Next go round I tried to use less water so they wouldn't grow mold...Problem #3--Didn't use enough water, hearts fell apart when I took them out of the molds.

All these problems brought us to about November 2nd. Arrive in Memphis for wedding week, and I'm making birdseed hearts like it is nobody's business. The playroom at my mom's house was covered with towels with birdseed hearts and fans set up to help them dry in time. No more time for problems, and thankfully no more problems!

Everybody jumped in to help stuff the bags, thank goodness!

When all was said and done they were perfect. Anybody need birdseed hearts? I'm now an expert!
